Wholesale bacteriostatic water is USP-grade water containing 0.9% w/v benzyl alcohol (9 mg/mL) as a bacteriostatic preservative, sold in sealed multi-dose vials — almost always 30 mL — by the case or pallet rather than the unit. Expect roughly $2.50–$6.00 per vial at single-unit retail, $1.10–$2.20 per vial in the 500–1,000 unit band, and under $1.00 per vial above ~5,000 units. The break-even against retail usually lands near 200–300 vials per order, because freight on a water-heavy pallet eats the discount below that. The spec that matters is a lot-specific certificate of analysis showing benzyl alcohol assay, pH, sterility, endotoxin, and particulate results — not a generic PDF. What the material actually is, on paper

Bacteriostatic water is defined by a monograph, which is what makes it purchasable as a documented material rather than a commodity. The specification set a buyer should be able to recite:

  • Benzyl alcohol content: 0.9% w/v nominal, typically assayed by GC-FID or reverse-phase HPLC-UV at 254–257 nm, with a release window around 90–110% of label (8.1–9.9 mg/mL).
  • pH: 4.5–7.0. Lots drifting toward the bottom of that band are within spec but worth noting in trend data across lots.
  • Endotoxin: NMT 0.5 EU/mL for bacteriostatic water for injection (plain WFI is held to 0.25 EU/mL). LAL method should be stated on the COA — kinetic chromogenic, turbidimetric, or gel-clot are not interchangeable for trending.
  • Sterility: USP <71>, which is a 14-day incubation. A COA issued 3 days after fill cannot contain a completed sterility result unless a rapid method is declared.
  • Particulate matter: USP <788> for small-volume parenterals — NMT 6,000 particles ≥10 µm and NMT 600 particles ≥25 µm per container.
  • Container/closure: Type I borosilicate vial, chlorobutyl or bromobutyl stopper, 20 mm aluminum crimp seal, with container closure integrity data on file.

Real wholesale economics, including the parts that hurt

Water is dense and cheap, which inverts the normal wholesale math. A packaged 30 mL vial weighs roughly 50–60 grams with tray and carton. One thousand vials is therefore 110–130 lb of billable freight before dunnage. A standard 48×40 pallet configured for glass vials holds on the order of 2,000–2,500 units.

That changes where savings appear:

  • Small parcel (under ~150 lb): $18–$45 ground, or $60–$120 for 2-day air. A 100-vial order carrying $30 freight adds $0.30/vial, which erases most of the first discount tier.
  • LTL palletized: $180–$450 depending on lane and accessorials. Liftgate service adds $45–$95; residential delivery adds $85–$160. On 2,400 vials, $300 of LTL is $0.125/vial — the tier finally works.
  • Temperature-controlled transit: rarely required at 20–25 °C, but winter lanes through the upper Midwest carry real freeze risk. Protection-from-freezing service typically adds $75–$200 per shipment.

The honest summary: below about 200 units, wholesale pricing on this particular material is mostly theater. The per-vial discount is real but freight and handling claw back 60–90% of it. Freight assumptions and transit windows are on shipping.

The cheapest bacteriostatic water on the market is usually the one with the shortest remaining dating. A $0.85 vial with nine months left is more expensive than a $1.40 vial with thirty.

Dating, storage, and the dead-stock problem nobody quotes

Manufactured shelf life is typically 24–36 months from fill. Distributors move short-dated lots aggressively, and a discount of 25–40% on a lot with 6–12 months remaining is common. Whether that is a bargain depends entirely on burn rate.

A lab consuming 40 vials a month clears 480 a year. Buying 2,400 units at $0.95 to capture a pallet price commits to five years of inventory against a 30-month expiry — roughly half the order is scrap on arrival, which turns an $0.95 vial into an effective $1.90 vial. The purchase looked like a 40% savings and delivered a 20% loss.

Practical dating rules for inbound qualification:

  • Require ≥18 months remaining dating at receipt on any order over 500 units, and put it in the PO terms, not the email thread.
  • Store at 20–25 °C with permitted excursions of 15–30 °C. Warehouse mezzanines routinely hit 95 °F / 35 °C in August; that is out of spec even though nothing visibly changes.
  • Benzyl alcohol content is the parameter most worth re-checking on aged inventory. Retained-sample assay at 12 and 24 months costs roughly $150–$400 per lot at a contract lab and is the only way to substantiate an internal extended-use claim.
  • Freezing is the underrated failure. A frozen vial that thaws intact can still have compromised closure integrity, and there is no visual tell.

When wholesale bacteriostatic water is the wrong purchase

This is the section most supplier pages omit. Named plainly:

Do not buy wholesale if your annual consumption is under roughly 300 vials. The arithmetic above does not work. Buy at the 50–100 unit tier, absorb the higher unit price, and keep dating fresh. Committing $2,000 to a pallet to save $600 while writing off $800 is a worse outcome than doing nothing.

Do not buy if you intend to resell without checking licensure. In the United States, bacteriostatic water for injection is a regulated drug product, not a chemical reagent. Redistribution generally implicates state wholesale drug distributor licensing under the Drug Supply Chain Security Act — separate licenses in most of the 50 states, application fees commonly $150–$800 each, surety bonds often $100,000, plus designated-representative requirements and renewal cycles. Buyers who plan to break cases and resell frequently discover this after the inventory is already in the building. Confirm your own status before ordering, not after.

Do not buy if you are sourcing on price alone from an unqualified vendor. The observable failure modes in this category:

  • Vials labeled "sterile water" being cross-sold as bacteriostatic — no preservative, entirely different monograph, different endotoxin limit.
  • A COA that is a template with the lot number typed in, identical values across every lot. Genuine assay data varies; a supplier reporting exactly 0.900% on twelve consecutive lots is reporting the label, not a measurement.
  • No manufacturer name or NDC on the carton, or a lot number that does not match the vial.
  • Non-monograph "research grade" water sold under the same search term with no assay, no sterility, and no defined preservative concentration.

The screen is short and mostly free:

  • Request the lot-specific COA before ordering, not after. Reputable suppliers return it in 1–3 business days; the ones that stall for a week are sourcing it from someone else.
  • Ask which entity holds the manufacturing registration and confirm it against the FDA drug establishment registration database — a 10-minute lookup.
  • Ask for the analytical method by name. "HPLC" is not an answer; column chemistry, mobile phase, injection volume, and detection wavelength are. A supplier that cannot describe its own analytical protocol did not run it.
  • Order a single case first, inspect seals and dating, and only then commit to a pallet. The $40 you overpay on a trial case is cheap insurance against a $2,000 write-off.
  • Read the return terms before, not after. Sterile product is often non-returnable once the case is opened; ours are stated on returns.
