Bulk Peptides From China: Cost, COA, Risk

What bulk peptides from China cost, the MOQs and lead times to expect, and how to verify identity, purity, counterion, and water content before you pay.

Buying bulk peptides from China means sourcing gram-to-kilogram quantities of synthetic peptide directly from the contract manufacturers in Hangzhou, Suzhou, Chengdu, and Shanghai that produce most of the world's SPPS (solid-phase peptide synthesis) output. Raw material cost typically runs 60–85% below US-packaged retail, with MOQs of 10 g to 100 g, 15–30 day synthesis lead times, and air freight of 5–9 days. What you do not automatically get is verified identity, an audited certificate of analysis, counterion and water content disclosure, or any recourse if the lot fails. Those gaps — not the synthesis — are where the money and the risk actually live. What "bulk" means at the factory versus at the reseller

A Chinese peptide CDMO quoting "bulk" is usually quoting crude or single-pass purified lyophilized powder in a foil bag, priced per gram of gross powder, not per gram of net peptide. The same facility may run a 5 g R&D-scale synthesis and a 25 kg GMP campaign on entirely different equipment, with different in-process controls and completely different price structures.

Three grades circulate under the same "bulk" label:

  • Crude / technical grade — post-cleavage, no prep-HPLC pass. Chromatographic purity often 60–80%. Cheapest by a factor of 3–5, and effectively unusable as a reference material.
  • Research grade — one or two prep-HPLC passes, typically specified ≥98% by RP-HPLC. This is the overwhelming majority of what moves in bulk.
  • GMP grade — full batch record, validated methods, qualified starting materials, ICH Q7 documentation. Commonly 8–20× the research-grade price and quoted with 60–120 day lead times.

A quote of $14/g against a competing quote of $210/g is frequently not the same product class at all. Ask which grade the number refers to before treating it as a comparison.

The landed cost math nobody puts in the quote

The FOB per-gram figure is the smallest line in the final number for small and mid-size orders. A realistic build-up on a 100 g research-grade order:

  • Material — $18/g × 100 g = $1,800
  • Air freight, DDP courier, temperature-controlled — $180–$450 depending on lane and cold-pack requirement
  • Customs brokerage on formal entry — $75–$150 per entry, plus a single-transaction bond at roughly $5 per $1,000 of value with a ~$50 floor, or ~$400–$600/year for a $50,000 continuous bond
  • Duties and Section 301 tariffs — organic chemical classifications have carried additional ad valorem rates of 7.5–25% depending on HTS line and year; verify the current line before quoting internally
  • Independent third-party verification — $60–$250 per lot for HPLC purity plus ESI-MS identity at a lab that has never spoken to the seller
  • Failed-lot reserve — budget 1 in 8 to 1 in 15 lots from an unqualified supplier will miss spec on first purchase

That $1,800 order lands closer to $2,400–$2,900 with verification, and the per-gram economics only work above roughly 25–50 g. Under 10 g, freight and testing exceed the material cost and the entire exercise loses to buying a documented domestic lot. Our wholesale terms exist for exactly that middle band.

Reading a Chinese COA: purity and content are different numbers

This is the single most common analytical error in bulk sourcing, and most supplier pages never mention it.

HPLC purity is a relative area percentage. It says the main peak accounts for 99.1% of the integrated UV absorbance under one specific gradient, at one wavelength, on one column. It says nothing about how much peptide is in the vial by mass.

Net peptide content is a mass fraction, determined by amino acid analysis or nitrogen determination. A lyophilized TFA salt of a 30-residue peptide can carry 8–22% trifluoroacetate counterion by weight, plus 3–8% residual water by Karl Fischer, plus residual acetonitrile and other solvents. A 1,000 mg bag of "99% pure" powder can honestly contain 720–800 mg of actual peptide. That is a 20–28% discrepancy hiding inside a truthful COA, and it recurs on every reorder.

A certificate reporting 99% purity with no net peptide content, no counterion identity, and no water determination is reporting one-third of the analysis and calling it complete.

Two further COA details worth interrogating:

  • Detection wavelength. Purity at 280 nm only sees aromatic residues. Peptides without Trp, Tyr, or Phe barely absorb there, and non-chromophoric impurities go invisible. 214–220 nm detects the amide backbone and is the defensible number.
  • Method disclosure. Column chemistry and dimensions, gradient program, flow rate, injection volume, and run time should all appear. A chromatogram cropped at 12 minutes on a 30-minute method conceals late-eluting hydrophobic deletion sequences. Ask for the full-scale, uncropped trace with the integration table.

Mass spectrometry closes the identity question that HPLC cannot. Compare the observed monoisotopic mass to theory; a -71 Da delta is a missing alanine, +42 Da is often an acetylation, and deletion sequences of a single residue routinely co-elute with the target. When buying bulk from China is the wrong call

Plainly: for a large share of buyers who search this term, direct import is a worse outcome than paying a domestic markup.

  • You need fewer than 10 grams. Freight, brokerage, bond, and independent testing add $350–$800 to any shipment regardless of size. At 5 g, per-gram landed cost can exceed the domestic price of an already-tested lot.
  • You cannot afford to lose the shipment. Peptide-containing shipments are subject to detention and refusal at the border. Detained entries can sit 10–45 days before disposition, and refused entries are exported or destroyed at the importer's expense. Payment is typically 30% deposit / 70% before shipment by wire — a T/T transfer with no chargeback mechanism. A seized $4,000 order is a $4,000 loss plus the wire fee.
  • You have no independent testing budget. COA documents are trivially edited. Chromatograms get reused across unrelated lots, retention times and all. A supplier-issued COA you cannot verify against your own third-party result is a graphic design file, not analytical data.
  • You need lot-to-lot consistency across a multi-year study. Small brokers reassign orders among 4–8 subcontracted synthesis houses based on capacity and price that week. The name on the invoice stays constant while the actual manufacturer changes, and impurity profiles shift underneath a stable-looking purity number.
  • Your workflow is sensitive to endotoxin, residual solvent, or elemental impurities. Standard research-grade COAs cover none of these. Adding endotoxin (LAL), USP <467> residual solvents, and ICH Q3D elemental screening adds $400–$1,200 per lot and 7–14 days, which erases the price advantage at anything under a few hundred grams.
  • You are a US business reselling onward. Importer of record status carries the compliance obligation, not the foreign shipper. "The factory said it was fine" has no standing in an entry review.

Anyone in more than two of these categories is better served buying a lot that has already cleared customs and already been independently tested. The trade-off is real and it is not close.

Supplier qualification that actually filters

Price quotes are free; qualification is what costs time. What separates a real manufacturer from a trading company with a website:

  • Ask for the raw instrument data file, not a PDF — a .lcd, .raw, or exported CSV with the integration table. Trading companies cannot produce it because they never ran the sample.
  • Request two independently synthesized lots of the same sequence and compare impurity profiles. Identical minor-peak retention times across lots indicate a reproducible process; wildly different profiles indicate different subcontractors.
  • Verify the facility address against the business license and the shipper name on the AWB. Mismatches between quoting entity, license holder, and shipper are the norm at brokers.
  • Ask what retention samples are held, and for how long. A serious manufacturer retains lot samples for 24–36 months and can re-test on request.
  • Ask for the stability protocol: lyophilized powder stored at -20 °C is generally specified for 24–36 months, 2–8 °C for far shorter, and shipping ambient for 3–4 weeks is common practice that suppliers rarely disclose unless asked. The realistic decision

Direct bulk import from China makes financial sense in a specific window: quantities of roughly 50 g and up, a sequence you will reorder repeatedly, an existing broker relationship, a testing budget of $150–$300 per lot, and tolerance for a 45–75 day cycle from PO to verified inventory. Inside that window the savings are substantial and durable.

Outside it — small quantities, single purchases, no independent verification, or no appetite for a border loss — the arithmetic reverses, and the domestic premium is cheaper than the failure modes it removes. Sourcing questions specific to a sequence, lot, or quantity can go through contact.
