Research-grade NAD+ (β-Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, CAS 53-84-9 free acid / 1184-16-3 disodium salt) typically runs $0.35 to $2.10 per 100 mg in bulk kilogram quantities, $18 to $55 per gram in 5–25 g research packs, and $28 to $95 per vial for lyophilized 500 mg and 1000 mg single-lot units with a batch-specific certificate of analysis. Analytical-grade material from a major catalog house (Sigma-Aldrich, TCI, Cayman) sits far higher — $65 to $310 per gram, and up to $400+ per gram for enzymatically-assayed grades sold in 10 mg and 25 mg ampoules. The spread is not arbitrary. It tracks documentation depth, salt form, water content, and who paid for the testing.
Pricing splits into four tiers, and buyers routinely compare across tiers without realizing it:
A researcher buying a reference standard to calibrate an instrument and a researcher buying working material for an assay development program have genuinely different requirements, and paying reference-standard prices for working material is a common and expensive mistake — a 50-fold price gap for a specification difference that often amounts to 98.5% versus 99.2%.
NAD+ free acid has a molecular weight of 663.43 g/mol. The disodium salt is 707.40 g/mol. Buying disodium salt means roughly 6.2% of the mass is sodium, not NAD+. Suppliers are not obligated to normalize the price, and most do not. Two listings at $40 per gram are not the same purchase if one is free acid and the other is disodium; the effective cost per mole differs by about 6.6%.
Water content compounds this. NAD+ is hygroscopic. Karl Fischer titration on lyophilized lots commonly returns 2% to 8% water, and a lot at 7% water sold as "99% pure by HPLC" contains meaningfully less NAD+ than the label arithmetic suggests, because HPLC area percent is typically reported on an anhydrous basis while the vial is weighed as-is. A $45 vial at 7% residual moisture has an effective cost of about $48.40 per gram of contained anhydrous material.
Area percent at 260 nm reports the fraction of UV-absorbing material that eluted. Residual solvent, sodium, water, and inorganic salts do not absorb at 260 nm. A 99.5% area-percent chromatogram is fully compatible with a lot that is 92% NAD+ by mass.
That distinction — area percent versus assay against a certified reference standard — is the single largest source of price confusion in this category, and it is rarely stated on a product page. Assay-by-quantitation costs the supplier more because it requires a purchased reference standard ($180–$600 per gram, consumed over a limited number of injections) and a validated calibration curve. Area-percent purity requires only a sample injection and integration.
Third-party analytical testing is a real, itemizable expense, and its presence or absence explains most of the price gap between two visually identical products:
A full package runs $700 to $1,600 per lot. Amortized across a 500-vial lot, that is $1.40 to $3.20 per vial — trivial. Amortized across a 40-vial specialty lot, it is $17.50 to $40.00 per vial, which is why small-batch and low-volume materials carry disproportionate documentation premiums. A supplier that sells 40 vials of a niche compound and still provides a full third-party package is absorbing a cost that a high-volume seller barely notices.
The failure mode to watch for: a COA that carries a lot number not printed on the vial, or a COA dated more than 24 months before the ship date. NAD+ degrades to nicotinamide and ADP-ribose. Degradation accelerates with heat, moisture, and alkaline conditions. Storage and handling costs are frequently omitted from purchase comparisons and frequently exceed the price difference between suppliers:

Volume pricing on NAD+ is genuinely steep because the fixed costs — lot testing, lyophilization run setup, documentation — are spread rather than repeated. Observed breakpoint structure:
The 100+ tier carries a hidden liability. One lot number across an entire order means one point of failure. If that lot fails an incoming-inspection assay, the entire purchase is affected, not one vial. Before comparing two prices, normalize them. Confirm salt form (free acid or disodium), confirm water content from the Karl Fischer result, confirm whether purity is area percent or quantitative assay, confirm the lot number on the COA matches the vial label, confirm storage temperature and the stated shelf life from date of manufacture rather than date of shipment, and add freight and cold-chain cost to the unit price. Two listings 15% apart on the shelf price frequently invert once those six adjustments are applied.
The honest summary: for most laboratory work, $28–$95 per gram-scale vial with a lot-matched third-party HPLC and MS package is the correct band. Below $22 per gram, the testing was probably not performed on that lot. Above $150 per gram, a reference-standard specification is being paid for, and it is only worth the premium if the method requires it.
